Gastronomy Events

The Asparagus Days
Asparagus is one of the most highly appreciated wild-growing plants that thrive on our island. Do not miss the opportunity to taste our wild asparagus that is available from March to May, with the peak season in April.

Every April many restaurants on our island enrich their menus with various dishes prepared with the young shoots of this extraordinarily healthy plant of a slightly bitter taste.

The culmination of the festival is an open-air culinary show in St. Christopher Square in the town of Rab, where a gigantic frittata (scrambled eggs) with wild asparagus is prepared for all visitors.

We invite you to visit our island during the Asparagus Days, take a walk over its meadows and through its woods, and enjoy the taste of asparagus specialities.

Island Lamb Fest
The preserved nature, abundance and variety of vegetation and the closeness to the sea are the ideal conditions for the breeding of Rab’s top-class lamb. The meat is traditionally prepared on a spit with roast potatoes, boiled with sauerkraut, or in a soup. However, this delicious meat deserves much more. For this reason, in the  May several of Rab’s restaurants will be offering specialities prepared with this tasty meat. We won’t tell you the names of the dishes but will leave it up to you to discover them for yourselves. We invite you to visit Rab and enjoy the tasty specialities prepared with the island’s lamb.
The Island Lamb Festival ends with an exhibition of Rab sheep. The exhibition will take place on  May in the Padova III Campsite. The diligent islanders will gladly present their sheep from which they make the top-class meat and excellent cheese. Of course, you will also have the chance to taste roast lamb, tripe and sheep’s milk cheese. We feel confident that after this festival you will gladly return to our island to treat your palate with Rab’s tasty lamb again.
Potato Fest
The potato was a staple that has raised generations here on the island of Rab. We believe our locally grown potatoes have a particular flavour, thanks to specific soil and presence of salt brought by the sea breeze. Locals call them “kumpir” (vs. krumpir in standard Croatian) and Lopar has honoured it by including the flower potato in the town herald. Some of our restaurants are cooking with locally grown potatoes most of the year.
Potato fest is the climax of potato season when many of our restaurants are offering seasonal dishes featuring locally grown potatoes and the finale is at the end of June in Paradise Beach. In an open-air food fair, one can choose between many potato dishes and other finger food, dance to the music, enjoy the entertainment for kids and grown-ups.

Pumidorfest
The tomatoes come in hundreds of shapes and sizes, but we in Lopar believe ours are the best of all. We think it is because of the particularly favourable climate and soil, but also because of the love we pour in growing our tomatoes. We call them pumidor. Flower of tomato is part of our town herald and we can hardly think of a hearty authentic dish that does not include our heavenly tomatoes.
Pumidorfest gathers our restaurants that are proudly offering seasonal tomato dishes featuring locally grown tomatoes. The climax of the pumidorfest is an open-air food fair mid of August. At front of Camping San Marino in Paradise Beach, there is a fierce cooking competition in preparing salsa and other tomato dishes are available for tasting, with music and entertainment programme.
